The Robe of Useful Items can be worn by Magic Users only and doesn't give any AC bonus. You might want to look to see if the Dragon Magazine mentions what magic items a Bard can use. The Dragon Bard does have Magic User spells but I'm not sure if that means you can use Magic User items too.
For Armor Class, the Bracers (AC5) are the best as the Leather +2 would give you an AC6 but the bracers also count as no armor so that would help Thief skills too.
