Not to mention, the nicknames you mention are less subtle and might tip off their importance (or unimportance) in the party.
I can either write him up as an NPC and play him as another player in the party or have him hang around as an eventual cohort. Either one is fine by me. Of course if he's a cohort then you will have more control over his actions then if I play him. But if you're alright with controlling another character and keeping up with his character sheet maintenance then that's cool with me.
