Betimi is correct. Sometimes personal sacrifices make perfect sense but I don't like to penalize players for roleplaying decisions. For example, she chose to pay money to downgrade her armor to chitin because in combat with Unreth, she swore an oath to wear his skin. It doesn't seem fair so I allowed her to her to keep the same ac bonus which was only a difference of +1 anyways. For you, it didnt seem fair to charge you to buy a book to enter a prestige class when normally anyone can enter on for free.
As for using a book for an explanation for him to remember forgotten knowledge you can achieve the same results by just by picking up whatever requirements that's needed for the prestige class and then say you suddenly remembered.
BTW, I have been slowly dropping hints here and there for character development. These 'bread crumbs' could be based upon something you wrote in your background, something you mentioned in or out of character, or something I thought might be cool. But it's up to your characters pick them up and investigate those clues and plot hooks.
