It seems whatever came down on this mansion completely flooded the garden with gravel and dirt. At least there seems to be a massive wall of rubble on the other side of the garden gate. By the look and feel of it, Lugar's dwarven instincts says the rubble is at least 5 feet thick and at least massive if not completely solid. A pick would do its job here but probably it's too loose for tunnelling; it would likely collapse or slide after each shovel of gravel removed.
There's a faint noise coming from beyond the ceiling.
For the duergar, it sounds like a squad of armored dwarves crossing a stone bridge.
For the ranger, it sounds like a few huge rhinos grazing atop a surface cave.
