Torin detects no new auras of magic. After burning up the web he returns to find an essentially empty room with a door at the far side. There seems to be no opening mechanism, button, lever or keyhole.
(deleted the burnt web from the map but otherwise no changes)

In the meantime (while the web is burning) Torin goes back to the gargoyes room with three doors and try to find some magical aura there.

If there's something magical it's surely beyond these thick walls of stone as Torin can't find anything else that's magical.

Then Torin start searching about some intresting thing in the spider's room (take20).

With a low grating sound the wall slides a few inches backwards then to the right, revealing a new room-- featuring a new inhabitant, not unlike the previous one!
Roll for initiative! (note: the wall moved including the button i.e. the button is now behind a stone wall, out of reach)

The spider spat a web towards Torin but its long time imprisonment took its toll on agility and the spittle flies far and wide. The spider moved in for the kill and an epic fight ensued.
Dwarf and vermin exchanged devastating blows in fast succession; the beast managed to penetrate the dwarf's defenses twice; fangs dripping from venom so thick it couldn't really get into the blood course of the stout fellow. Even after several blows the famished spider didn't give up and finally succumbed to a last blow and collapsed into a heap of chitinous mass. The large vermin was trapped so long ago its poison lost its pontential-- causing Torin no more than a brief unease in his stomach. Searching the enclosed space brings its benefit to the priest-- the remains of a robed figure, pretty much like a human as far as Torin can tell from the parched skin dried upon the bones. The spider's victim had long hair white as snow and the skin is also unusually light-shaded for a dried mummy. Near the body Torin discovers the gnarly quarterstaff of the figure, broken into smaller pieces as the spider gnawed upon it, and scraps of fine paper-- probably the latest lunch of the vermin was a vast tome; a spellbook maybe? There seems to be but one object that survived its ravenous hunger; a bone tube (once encased in fine leather), probably the hollowed femur of a large mammal but Torin can't tell for sure. It contains a scroll, praise Lirr, intact. The femur itself acts as a worn, but functional, map case-- except that it has no stopper so it cannot be sealed tight. |
