I could start putting points into UMD, but it will take me awhile to become reliable with it, since it's cross-class.

I have the Charisma bonus at least Yah, that's why I put "psionic (ie magic)," so I have the skill covered. Given how cross-class skills work in 3.5, I wouldn't burn them on Use Magic Device if I were you, you'll use up a bunch of skill points and still have a skill that's only barely useable, even with a decent CHA bonus. Another option is, of course, liberal handing out of healing potions, or an NPC healer. (Or, for that matter, a player with 2 PCs).
