Return to the Rusty Rat - DM Surranó - 06-15-2016

About chopping down doors. Neat article and I couldn't agree more. Also, have you read Chainmail Bikini? (The comics)

You called it quits still I'm interested in what is it you disagree.
Did I say adamantine wouldn't do the job? No.
Did I say wood would likely break? Yes.
Did I say you cannot retroactively replace your weapon? No. I even went as far as proposing alternatives.
Is the situation harmless? Yes.
Do I have any clue why Torin was so eager assaulting ancient Dwarven masonry? Nope.
Did I miss anything? Probably: your point.

Comments of anyone following The Dwarven Ruins are welcome.

Oh and one more thing. To all three of the current solo players. This is a dungeon crawl so you do well if you do min-maxing. Your contribution in fighting the big fight in the main story is important. Without the three of you the rest are... simply put... dead meat. Reviewing the whole storyline this encounter is likely the hardest in the whole story (seven chapters) compared to PC power level.

RE: Return to the Rusty Rat - Lugar - 06-15-2016

You both have valid points. I commend Torin for not letting the discussion derail the game. Good article, I've read Chainmail Bikini before but haven't in a long while now.

1.) I think magic weapons shouldn't break unless attacked, basically unless it was on purpose.
2.) There are other vessels to put the water in yes, but Torin showed his new adventuring buddy two things by beating in the stone. 1 - he's willing to do that for him, "sign of friendship." 2 - the power of his weapon, "hey you want me on your side."
3.) It's conceivable that the handle is all metal considering it's masterwork and has magical properties.
4.) The weapon wasn't designed to carve out stone so the effort would most likely be wasted or prolonged but not impossible.
5.) Concerning the article, players have numerous and inventive was to bypass a door, strong barbarians can beat it down, magic users can simply bypass them, rogues pick the locks, paladin's knock.... doors were made to be opened.
6.) Picking an adamantine Morningstar as a weapon was brilliant. Smash away my friend! I wish I had an adamantine war-pick.

About animated ropes and Blind (Ex)

Here's the deal.

Animated rope of 60' length is 3lbs. Compared to a Large snake (around 200lbs) it should be small at best but given that the Animate Rope spell explicitly says wrapping creatures needs them to be no more than 1ft away we could even say tiny.

Animated objects like blankets, rugs, tapestries have Blind (Ex) as a special attack:

Quote:A sheetlike animated object such as a carpet or tapestry can grapple an opponent up to three sizes larger than itself. The object makes a normal grapple check. If it wins, it wraps itself around the opponent’s head, causing that creature to be blinded until removed.
Now, a rope is a very thin rug.  Smile so it may have some issues with this maneuver but let's say three successful grappling maneuvers qualify.

Since the rope has a move speed of 10 feet per round (and cannot hustle) and a circumference of a 12ft tall humanoid's head is about 5ft it needs a full round plus a standard action to wrap around the statue's head but in this particular situation I rule that the element of surprise allows the rope to make three wraps around the head in the first round.

Remember that starting a grapple begins with entering enemy space, provoking attack of opportunity, but again, in this particular situation I rule that the opponent lost sight of the duergar and thus will be flat-footed against this maneuver, thus no AOO.

Even then, a small object's grapple modifier is -4 (26 with a natural 20) while the large construct's grapple modifier is 28 (18 with a natural 1) so it's a snowball's chance in hell for you to roll three natural 20s and me to roll three natural 1s at the same time.

But I freaking love the idea so much that I. Will. Allow. It. This. One. Time.
With three melee touch attacks on behalf of the rope (BAB 0 +1 size +0 str) it will succeed.

RE: Return to the Rusty Rat - Silent Giant - 06-16-2016

What's with you? Your heart is melting... Smile

RE: Return to the Rusty Rat - Lugar - 06-16-2016

Yeah, I don't know where the idea came from, necessity is mother of all invention right? Much better than just throwing a tangle foot bag at it. So I'm making 3 more touch attacks?

Next thing to do is put a large object in front of it and watch it tripWink but we should probably run like hell instead!
