Imperial GAV (Hoverscout) left behind, not taken on this mission.  @Man in Blackot sure if you want to allow him to start play owning a ground assault vehicle, If you do not want him to own one that is fine.

Homeworld: Kuat

Background: Garlen was born on Kuat, and was fully expecting to follow in his parent's footsteps, and work in the Kuat Drive Yards manufacturing plants. He actually showeda great aptitude for it, listening raptly to his mother and father discuss their work in the factory that produced  AT-STs and AT-AT's for the Imperial Army contracts. He would often spend hours and hours working with his father on their repulsor-lift sled, and even had an insane fascination with walkers, having several of the remote operated toy walkers and assault craft toys that KDY sold to children around the Empire. [Ooc just makes sense, even IRL companies diversify and create toys and marketing for their other contracts. Imperial toys themselves would be propaganda tools.]. As soon as he was old enough, at the age of 16, he joined the workforce, and went to work in teh Kuat Drive Yards factories. But he was restless, he wanted to see more of the Empire than just the view from the Ring (Kuat drive Yards orbital factory).  He also felt trapped, even at such a young age, his life all mapped out, never to be important, just destined to build things, that other people would get to go out and use. What good is it to build a star destroyer if you never get to travel to another star system?

So on his 18th name-day Garlon advised his parents he had signed up for the Academy. His mother was furious, she did not want her son going off to who knows where, in some backwater on the Outer Rim. He was safe here, in the Core, where people were civilized, not wild and barbaric. He argued with her long and hard, he was not going to just wander the galaxy aimlessly, he was going to join the Imperial Army. He was going to help people, bring the order of the Empire to those lawless planets. He was going to be a part of making people feel safe, secure in their futures, just like the people of Kuat. In the end, he lost, she was not going to let him go, that was it, his father would have none of it, and his word was final. His future was here, Kuat was safe in the Core, he would not get to go gallivanting off to join the Imperial Navy or the Imperial Army, it was not a life of adventure and wonder, no matter what the recruiting vids on the HoloNet said.

Then the troopers came, in the middle of his shift at the factory. They told him that his application had been accepted, he was going to the Academy, no matter what his parents said. When he had submitted his application, he had also submitted the required DNA sample.  He was a 98% match to the required template.. not only was he perfectly suitable for the Imperial Army, he was going to be an Imperial Cadet groomed to join the Stormtroopers. That morning was the last he has seen his parents in person, as he was only allowed to return home with an Imperial recruiter as escort to get his personal possessions. His parents were at work, they were not even home to say farewell, they were merely alerted at their employment by an Imperial recruitment representative, there was nothing they could do to stop it.

Due to his mechanical and technical aptitude scores he was trained for a full year as an Imperial Cadet at the Raithal Academy, before beginning his training in earnest. The real training began when he was transferred to the Carida Academy. Two grueling years of training later, DS-4791 was graduated from training as a Stormtrooper, and assigned to his regiment.  He had not heard teh name Garlen once in the last two years, Garlen was just a fuzzy memory. DS-4791 would serve the Empire with distinction, as a hovertank co-pilot, gunner, and mechanic.

Then six months into his service things started to fall apart,  his unit was assigned to oversee the eviction of some farmers from a land that the Empire needed. It made sense, the Empire needed that land as it was the ideal location on that planet for the communications array that was to be set up there. The array would help the entire world, by acting as a long range connection to other systems, rather than relying on the short range communications arrays that the planet had before. So DS-4791 did not understand why the squatters were protesting the eviction. They had been informed that if they left peacefully they would be allowed to make their homes elsewhere. This was no longer their land, it was needed by the Empire to improve their lives. When the command came to fire on the squatters he obeyed without question, it was the right thing to do, the few could not stand in the way of progress for the many. So why did it give him nightmares. The worst was seeing the little girl, torn apart by the concussive blast. Why did her face haunt him?

Then came the Holo message from home, from his father. He had not meant to see it. Or at least his squad leader had not meant him to. Heis squad leaders datapad was malfunctioning in the field, and no one was qualified in computer repair, so his squad leader had given him the datapad to try and fix it, since he was the most technically inclined in he squad.

When he gained access to the corrupted file system on the  malfunctioning datapad he saw the file. A message to Garlen made no sense, Garlen was gone, he was DS-4791. Why would his squad leader have a message to Garlen in his files? Labelled 'Alert: Potential Familial Communication: DS-4791' there was no mistaking it referred to him.  He could not resist opening the file. it was 4 months old already, so anything in it could not have been urgent. The message was short, his father looked like he had not eaten in days, he was unshaven, and unkempt. A disgrace to the Empire. Then his father spoke, quietly, and softly, choking back tears. "Garlen, please come home. Not to stay, we.. I know your service is needed by the Empire. But please, come and say goodbye. There was an accident.. your mother was irradiated, she will  die. The corporation and their doctors say there is nothing that can be done, it is just a matter of days. Please, come home... The only comfort I have.. she has.. is her beliefs.. she keeps talking about it being alright.. that she will be one with the Force... whatever that means... crazy ideas that she gets. But she asks about you.. wherever you are, come and hold her, one last time let her see her son..." It was there that the message ended, leaving Garlen, no DS-4791.. confused.  Strange that they had not passed on such an important message. Why would his commanding officers keep that from him?

Then insult was added to injury, a final blow to DS-4791. As a stormtrooper he  had regular physical and mental evaluations, they were part of routine. So after his regular monthly psychological evaluation he thought all was normal, until they called him in for a second one only two days later. Then a third the day after that, a more intensive evaluation than he had ever endured before.  Then came the demotion and transfer out of the Stormtroopers, and assignment to a lowly role as prison transport driver with the Imperial Army. All they would tell him is that 'DS-4791 was no longer mentally suitable for stormtrooper duty'. They gave no explanation. And they threatened Garlen Veir withcourt martial if he asked one more tie why he was being downgraded to nothing more than a transport driver. He was ordered to use his given name, he no longer had a right to his stormtrooper designation, he had failed. Garlen did not understand.

And still the nightmares came. Why in the dreams did the little girl look so much like his mother? Why did he fire that cannon at his mother?

Then came his first assignment as prisoner transport driver. He was assigned to accompany a prisoner transfer to the spice mines of Kessel, where he would assume the role of transport driver moving prisoners from the spaceport to the mines. Basically a prison sentence in itself, demoted and punished for what? For doubting the wisdom of the Empire? For having a family? For having remorse over murdering innoent protestors?  For hating himself for being a monster?

He was underneath the prisoner repulsorlift transport in the cargo bay of the space transport, doing maintenance when he heard the distinctive sounds of blaster fire in the ships tight corridors. Something was happening. He rolled out from under the transport, unholstered his blaster and exited the cargo bay, only to see two stormtroopers rushing by in their white armour. "There has been a prisoner break, follow us." one explained as they rushed forward through the ship towards the cockpit. Rounding a corner he sees the two stormtroopers leveling their baster rifles at a group of unarmed prisoners that crowd in the entry door of the cockpit, about to cut the tired and wounded escapees down mercilessly. That was it, he finally understood what he had to do.  He ran up behind the two and tackled the first trooper into the other, destroying their aims. As all three went down in a heap, with blaster fire deflecting off the walls and ceiling, he shouted at them "This is not what I signed up for! Not a one of these prisoners is a criminal or rebel."  There is more sounds of blaster fire from inside the cockpit, followed by the roar of a wookie and a sickening crunch. Then he fired his own blaster, point blank into one of the troopers and the man stopped moving. The prisoners turn and handled the other, brutally and quickly.

Entering the cockpit he found a young Imperial pilot clutching her wounded shoulder, an unconscious wookie crumpled at her feet. He holstered his blaster and raised his hands. "C'mon taking civilians to their death is not what they sold you in the recruiting vids is it? Let's get these people free"

He reacted quickly, grabbing the emergency medpack from the wall by the door and rushing to the fallen wookie, intent on saving the creature before it's life ebbed. He knelt down beside the creature and began to work to patch the worst of the wounds when he saw the woman stagger again.  "Hang on, I'll get to you as soon as GAK!..."  His words were abruptly cut off as the wookie's huge fist closed on his throat. The woman managed to get the wookie to release him, but he did not know how, all he could see was spots in front of his eyes and hear his own heart pounding in his ears as he coughed, trying to get air. As soon as he could shake it off he again worked on the wounded creature, ready to leap back out ofd the way this time.

In the weeks that followed, Garlen trained with the Rebels, attempting to gain their acceptance of the former trooper as much as finding where he could be of use. During these weeks would occasionally seek out SS-7-18.. I mean Nova.  The only other ex-Imperial in the training camp, she understood a little of what it was like, to overcome years of indoctrination.

Naturally, this meant he also encountered the big Wookie that was often at Nova's side. He feels oddly protective of the former slave, as if he feels personally responsible for the slave raid. As a trooper, who had visited several different worlds and systems, he had acquired a knack for languages, but this Shyriiwook proved strange, he understands most of it, but when he tries to speak it, he just cannot shape the sounds.

Personality: Garlen is outwardly cold and aloof. When he does speak it is short, and pointed. He does not engage in idle chatter. Inwardly, Garlen s a man broken. He despises what the Empire made him, what they made him do. What he had trained for willingly, even eagerly. Several times, he has found himself alone in his quarters, holding his blaster, wondering if he should just take the easy way, to destroy the monster. The monster still lives, caged certainly, but there in his mind nonetheless. DS-4791 didn't have fear, or regret, or self-doubt. Or self-loathing. Ds4791 was just a machine, a ruthless, unfeeling weapon. A monster capable of killing innocents. And Garlen has to face that he willingly became that monster.

Motivations: He will never ever be able to right the wrongs he has committed, but he can make the Empire pay for them. He is going to destroy the Empire or die trying, then maybe he can silence the ghosts in his memory. But until the Empire is destroyed he cannot quite, the image of that little girl demands it. To do less is to fail her.

Quote: "This is not what I signed up for! Not a one of these prisoners is a criminal or rebel!"

Connection With Characters:
  • Nova: Garlen finds a kindred spirit in her. While she has not seen or done the things he has, she at least knows how strong the indoctrination process is. She knows how ruthlessly the Empire works to stamp out self-identity in its elite soldiers.
  • Rahullu: Garlen feels responsible for the big guy. He may not be one of the slavers that inflicted so much suffering on this being, but there was a time where he would have been the one holding the whip and not thought about it.
  • Tiktuk: The small creature is a curiousity. It has not been bold enough to openly communicate with anyone yet, but  Garlen has seen it moving around, repairing droids and computers throughout the Rebel base for weeks now. he suspects that half the base would be a non-functioning mess without this little creature secretly maintaining things. A strange creature, he feels sorry and responsible for it as well, so obviously alien and far from home due to the Empire

ABOUT US
A gaming group started in late 2005 when several members (from all over the world) came together on a long-running forum website called Plothook.net (formally known as Highmoon.net). Several games transformed from a by-the-book format to highly modified versions that became new hybrid systems with completely custom rules and abilities. Ten years later, these faithful players wanted to secure their work and their stories, becoming the basis of these forums.
