Chapter 2-2: The Seven - DM Surranó - 03-16-2017

It's late morning by the time the party of--

a hulking half-orc wielding a hefty double axe,
an old dwarf wearing protective goggles and decorated with various weapons, including a miner's pick,
a leisurely clad gnome who's short even for his kind, equipped quite like the average swashbuckler,
another gnome, even smaller, riding a black bear,
and a stout dwarf clad in dull black metal plates tip to toe

-- make it to the court of the city hall. Aside from the guards standing at the gate and the doors as usual there are two more--

a tall blond elf in elegant but practical clothes, a greatsword hanging through her back down to her heels, her lavender eyes piercing as if she could see into the deepest hidden recesses of your subconscious,
and a short human woman with unremarkable appearance, dressed up in a more traditional outfit with many pouches and other features suitable for scrolls, wands, and rods.

OOC - you may add some introduction and interaction here. I'm still waiting for Shanna's full background to give her the hook. Until then, just pretend that you know who Geddin is Smile

In a few minutes the familiar figure of Geddin Goldenhands appears in the main entrance, flanked by two guards as usual.

"Come on in, the Council has gathered." he addresses all of you, in his usual excited tone.

The party is then led to the elongated council hall, dominated by an oval table with about sixteen chairs. The opposite end of the hall is covered by windows from floor to ceiling but currently they are shaded with cream coloured velvet. A set of magical torches along the walls supplement the sunlight weakly filtering through the thick carpet. The whole council is already seated around the table, with plenty places left free for the adventuring company. Piergeiron offers these seats as usual. Once the crowd is seated he begins.

"Friar Maul has briefed us about our new company. For the sake of formal introduction, please nod briefly. No need for fancy displays." Then he looks down to a piece of parchment in front of him and reads aloud, sending a glance to each of the members.

Silent Giant, a half-orc hunter, bane of undead.
Merrinna Starsong, an elven arcane warrior, new apprentice of Mistress Irildë Goldenhair.
Lugar Bargrimm, a seasoned dwarven miner, who defeated the green hag of Baldur's Gate.
Toot of a family unknown, master of elemental affairs.
Torin Hillfist, dwarven cleric of the Lady Poet.
Portho Nihilbuck, chronicler of the Waterdhavian undercity.
Shanna Rendin, delegate of Magister Varnai, Mistress of the Tower of Conjuration.

"Now right to the point." the major finishes, sending a sideways glance to Geddin. "Terse, please." he adds.

Geddin stands up, clears his throat, and briefly summarises the situation.

"While you were away we managed to understand a bit of the workings of the Chant of Ages. Time is of fuzzy essence in this spell that seems to be closest to conjuration" he glances at Shanna, "but not quite. To put it simply, the gate can be opened at specific points in time and we assume there is a timer every time that influences the closure of the gate but that seems to be an amount subjective to those who had passed the gate. It is also regulated by the events on the other side. If the Sea is locked up the portal will not last much longer."

"Now, on to the Second Sea; Sea of Fear. Since the source of evil in the Sea of Hate was an intelligent undead, hated by most living and the other way around as well, the origin of the Sea of Fear must be tied to some evil that is feared by most; or an evil that fears most living; but that's less likely. The Sea of Hate was a planar gate so we may expect something similar for the Sea of Fear but I remind you it can be anything you can throw the key into, be it a mirror, a lake or a campfire. The Key of Hate was an evil artifact that opened the Sea in the first place so the Key of Fear may be something that incites fear. Then again, it may be anything else that ties to the Sea."

"And now some details about what we managed to decipher from the lengthy description of the Chant and the associated ritual. The Sea of Fear is strongly tied to arcane powers. Be careful about anything arcane, even your own powers, and make sure you are not lured by enchantments, charms, or compulsions. Take painful efforts to watch the time since it may fly faster than you think and the portal may close before you'd ever realise."

"Finally, the ritual has already started. The gate is to open at nightfall today. You are free to prepare until then."

"Questions?"

Hey, Merri!!! - he yells and goes closer quickly - You are alive!!! Impossible!!! - he pats his back - Wit....... Khm, Miracle!!!

RE: Chapter 2-2: The Seven - Merrinna Starsong - 03-16-2017

Merri is left waiting by the doors feeling a little self-conscious and out of sorts. Her formal dress was clean but was rumpled and still had grass from where she sat. Her feet were grass-stained and her hair was probably a mess. She hadn't thought to grab a mirror before setting out after her awakening. When she finally does look, she sees a drawn and pale face looking back at her. Her lips seemed bloodless, vanishing into her pale skin. There was a tightness around her eyes that spoke of great fatigue or stress. Only been dead a day and she still looked it.

Merri is in the act of digging in her pack for boots when the orc arrives. The sudden shout makes her jump in surprise. She smiles lightly. "Impossible? Maybe. The reflection in the mirror seems that of a dead woman, but alive I am. For now at least."

RE: Chapter 2-2: The Seven - Lugar - 03-16-2017

Lugar stands back and watches the big half-human get a little teary eyed with Merri. She probably wouldn't recognize him in his old miner disguise anyway. It was good to see her back on her feet again. Lugar felt badly that they had to carry her lifeless body in a sack. We probably could have filled that space with more loot. He shrugs away those thoughts and makes a silent promise to himself not to loose another friend again, for loots sake.

After listening and nodding along with the speaches and introductions Lugar clears his throat, "So we could have been trapped on the other side of the gate if we didn't pass through in time?"

RE: Chapter 2-2: The Seven - DM Surranó - 03-17-2017

Private to Lugar
Where is Merri's Hand of the Mage? Is there anything else Lugar (or maybe someone else) took for... um... safekeeping?

Geddin looks Lugar deep in the eye, apparently thinking hard for a moment.
"That is a possibility, yes."

How long were we away? Can somebody appraise our loot? (ooc-identify)

What do you think what is the most fearsome creature? We have talked about dragons, drawelves, etc.
But Lugar, told me about mind-flayers as a fearsome creatures. Can you help us to hunt these monsters?

RE: Chapter 2-2: The Seven - DM Surranó - 03-17-2017

OOC - forgot that the court wizards and priests will identify all your loot Smile Updating Treasure thread.

RE: Chapter 2-2: The Seven - Merrinna Starsong - 03-18-2017

"Mind flayers?" Merri begins to deftly weave her hair into braids around the crown of her head. "What makes you think that we will face mind flayers?"

Because Lugar said they are very-very fearsome creatures.
But there is a chance to face monsters with "d", dragons, devils, demons, drawelves, duergars, dwarves. I think they are also fearsome but I have never heard about mind flayers before so I have to prepare to hunt them.

OOC - "The Sea of Fear is strongly tied to arcane powers." I think mind flayers are strongly tied to psionic powers not to arcane. But they use some arcane powers too. "...watch the time since it may fly faster than you think " may=mind, fly=flayer, think=mind flayer Big Grin

RE: Chapter 2-2: The Seven - Merrinna Starsong - 03-18-2017

"You do not hunt the Illithid. They hunt you. They would use you like you use your axe.." She puts the finishing touches on her hair, twirling the excess braids into a pair of knots. "I know something of them. Enough to know we would need to take extra precaution to ward our minds for they are the playground of the Illithid."

She pauses in thought. "Why 'D'?"

(Tinfoil hats, anyone? Wink )
